Health Effects Of Stress
How do you define Stress?
Stress is now generally accepted as the principal malady of our 21st century lives. The constant pressure associated with living in a fast-paced world has created an environment where nearly everyone feels the effects of stress. To suggest that a small electronic device could resolve your stress problems totally is maybe a bit strong but we are confident that the two devices we are going to mention are capable of doing exactly that! They are the RESPeRATE Blood Pressure Lowering Device and the Heartmath emWave Personal Stress Reliever. What follows will help you understand better what stress is and how it affects you and most of all, how one of these devices is likely to help you.
Surprisingly tricky to calibrate and quantify, one could say that stress is the wear and tear an individual undergoes in response to day-to-day demands and worries. Amongst the most common causes of stress are change, such as house moves, marriage, new child arrival; illness; injury; deadlines and career and lifestyle changes. However, it is the effects of stress, like pressure and tension, that we feel in response to the little everyday challenges such as peak time traffic, waiting in line, and too many emails, that do the most damage.
Stress is the body and mind's response to any pressure that disrupts its normal balance. Stress “happens” when our perception of events doesn't meet our expectations and we are unable to manage our reaction. Stress expresses itself in the form of resistance, tension, disappointment and worry, throwing off our physiological and emotional balance. Prolonged or too frequent periods of stress can are likely to be disabling and health problems may well follow.
Stress and the effects of stress are often misunderstood. We look at outside events as the source of stress, the fact is that stress is really caused by our emotional reactions to events and the way we deal with them. The stress we experience in today's world often goes unnoticed and unmanaged. Often people cloak the stress they are feeling and if allowed to continue and increase to unacceptable levels, it is likely to manifest itself in the appearance of health problems. Inability to recognize build-up of stress and to deal with management of stress has brought about what is best described as a pandemic of low-level depression and anxiety.
Effects of stress
The effects of stress in people are seen physically, mentally and emotionally. Stress is implicated in up to 90% of health problems according to the American Institute of Stress. Too much stress can contribute to and exacerbate many health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, depression and sleep disorders. A number of studies have been undertaken and show the debilitating impact of stress on one’s health:
· Three 10-year studies concluded that emotional stress was more predictive of death from cancer and cardiovascular disease than smoking. People not managing to control their stress were found to have an alarming 40% higher death rate than non-stressed individuals.
· A Study by Harvard Medical School of 1,623 survivors of heart attack found that the risk of subsequent heart attacks in those that remained calm during emotional conflicts was half that of those who became angry.
· Harvard School of Public Health carried out a 20-year study involving over 1,700 “older” men and found a significantly increased risk of coronary in those that worried about their health, personal finances and social conditions.
· More than 50% of heart disease cases are not attributable solely to the generally accepted risk factors of high cholesterol, smoking or lack of adequate exercise.
· A study by the Mayo Clinic of coronary disease victims found that the greatest predictor of future coronary events such as cardiac arrest, heart attack and heart related death was psychological stress.
It is small wonder that with stress being such a commonly found malady, an industry has developed to help people deal with it. offering a varied selection of treatments, therapies and courses, several of which it has to be said, charge a frightening price. It is not all bad news. We have discovered, researched and reviewed two products designed to reduce stress and which should prove to be both effective and affordable. The Heartmath emWave Personal Stress Reliever and the RESPeRATE Blood Pressure Lowering device, were each found to be effective in relieving stress and reducing blood pressure. Although there are similarities and there is a large element of common purpose, the two systems do differ but reference to a product review will make clear the main differences.
